摘要

This technical Annual Report describes and details the progress made in the further development and evaluation of the implantable, integrated electrically-actuated left ventricular assist system during this reporting period (August 31, 1980 to July 31, 1981). Major accomplishments during this period include implantation of textured metallic (powdered metallurgy) blood-contacting surfaces; magnetic coupling between the motor shaft and speed reducer of the energy converter; development of metallic spring coupling pads to replace the adhesively-bonded elastomeric pads between the actuator arms and pump pusher-plate; development of the Model VI roller traction drive energy converter system; modification of the external energy converter control system to provide evaluation of a variable synchronization point control; continued development of an 18-cell internal battery unit with a demonstrated 50-minute capacity for untethered LVAS support; and investigations of implantable compliance chambers. Chronic in-vivo studies are continuing with durations exceeding 120 days.
