摘要

Environmental and ship performance data were collected aboard the USCGC POLAR STAR in April 1980 as part of a multi-year program to make an operational assessment of the feasibility of a year-round transportation system serving northwestern Alaska. Volume I contains a description of program objectives, planned deployment, and the data collection program. A description of all data collected and the subsequent analysis is given for level ice and the forty profiled pressure ridges. Underwater photographs were successfully taken of pressure ridge keels and the coefficient of friction between the ship's hull and ice were measured.
