Some Applications of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy in the Examination of Painting Materials

Although limited in its applications to painting materials, infrared spectroscopy nevertheless is very useful and even essential in helping to fully characterize certain of these materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy offers several advantages over traditional dispersive infrared spectrophotometry, and generally gives spectra of higher quality than those obtainable with older instrumentation. Applications to resins and several traditional modern pigments are described, and the theoretical basis for spectral correlations in inorganic compounds containing polyatomic ions (which include many pigments) is briefly discussed.
