The objective of this research study was to evaluate the feasibility of using Bluetooth data as a surrogate analysis measure of traffic and was conducted in several stages. The initial stage was to evaluate a number of hardware related variables including: (1) in-vehicle Bluetooth source placement; (2) traveling speeds of vehicles with Bluetooth sources; (3) variations in detectability among several Bluetooth sources; (4) horizontal and vertical roadside Bluetooth antenna placement options; and (5) Bluetooth antenna selection.
