摘要

Visits were made to the Chrysler Corporation Adhesive Operations (SIC-3711) at three locations to observe the processes involving adhesives, emphasizing the method of application and the associated occupational health hazard controls. Specific processes observed included the bonding of friction materials to metal brake shoes using a proprietary thermosetting adhesive, the bonding of inner panels to hood and rear deck lids, and the installation of vinyl tops and sound deadener pads to car bodies. The thermosetting adhesive was a solvent-based formulation. Solvents were controlled in the gluing operation by isolation of this process in an enclosed block structure with local exhaust ventilation. No solvent odor was detected at the oven loading or unloading station. Vehicle hoods and rear deck lids were bonded to reinforce inner panels using a polyvinylchloride-based structural adhesive. Workers on the assembly line at operations following the installation of sound deadener pads may have been exposed to solvents. The author concludes that potential health hazards at these facilities were well controlled. The process was inherently free of hazard. The author recommends that the automotive industry not be considered a candidate for inclusion in an adhesives usage study.
