Process development conducted during the study has clearly established membrane separation techniques as an effective means to remove organic chemicals from industrial wastewater streams. Rapid exchange rates observed for parachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol imply that Poroplastic membrane have a high efficiency for pentachlorophenol and parachlorophenol removal. rapid transport indicates that relatively short space-times would provide sufficient organic removal, thus allowing large volumes of wastewater to be handled by a small number of membrane extraction units. After identifying several solvents with good acetic acid extraction characteristics, successful removal of acetic acid from artificial wastewater streams was achieved during single membrane extraction experiments.
