Engineering Noise Control Technology Demonstration for the Furniture Manufacturing Industry

A demonstration of engineering noise control technology for the furniture manufacturing industry (SIC-3553) was conducted. Noise control education programs and a complete research, development, and demonstration program for noise control was developed. The study identified the dominant noise sources for wood working machines and proposed methods of control for each source. No new technology was developed; only proven noise reduction techniques were applied. Noise control techniques were also developed for saw mill and lumber industries. Noise evaluations were conducted for individual and overall machine operations within a pilot facility. Control technology was selected for each machine based on a judgment of the best balance between noise reduction, cost effectiveness, minimized adverse effects on production and maintenance, and overall impact on safety and health. The authors conclude that engineering control is a viable and effective method for protecting the hearing of workers in the furniture industry. The program demonstrates the technical feasibility and economic viability of noise control in a typical furniture factory through engineering means. Documentation is provided for feasible noise control technology to reduce noise in the furniture industry, including both technical and economic considerations.
