A walk through survey was conducted to assess control technology of hazardous wastes disposal at the incinerator of 3M Company (SIC-2800), Cottage Grove, Minnesota in June 1981. The incinerator handled 600 gallons of liquid waste and 4000 pounds of semisolid waste per hour. The wastes were segregated prior to burning according to health, fire, and instability hazards. Liquid hazardous wastes were pumped from their containers into storage tanks. Dilution ventilation at the rate of 12 room changes per hour was used to suppress air contaminants. Semisolid wastes were fed into the incinerator by a semiautomatic food system. The kiln was maintained at a negative pressure of 0.2 inches of water that prevented the diffusion of fumes into the workplace. Workers in the control room were shielded by metal screens that opened automatically in case of fire. A pressure relief mechanism was installed at the feed end of the kiln to prevent explosions. The author concludes that the waste incineration operations are technically advanced and environmentally sound. An in depth survey is recommended.
