It is thought that one reason agriculture performance in Egypt has failed to keep pace with increasing food needs may be that malnutrition among the rural population seriously reduces their productivity. This study surveys a random sample of 100 households in four villages in the rice zone. It is one of several in five distinct agronomic zones of Egypt. Information is provided on human food intake, the nutritive value of the diets, the general trends in caloric consumption, the quality of protein intakes, and the levels of aborbable iron in food consumed. Results are summarized in tables in the report.
