Industrial Hygiene Report, In-Depth Study Report of Solvent Exposure, Johnston and Murphy Shoe Company, Genesco Park, Nashville, Tennessee, 1979

A survey was conducted of techniques to control occupational exposures to toluene (108883), benzene (71432), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), acetone (67641), ethyl-acetate (141786), xylene (1330207), hexane (110543), and heptane (142825) at the Johnston and Murphy Shoe Company (SIC-314), Geneso Park, Nashville, Tennessee, on November 28 to 30, 1979. The facility relied primarily on local exhaust ventilation to minimize employee exposure. Protective clothing, shoes, and respirators were not required, but were provided. It is concluded that exposure to benzene at these concentrations is not hazardous. It is recommended, however, that the management make every effort to maintain the benzene concentrations below 1ppm.
