Economic Aspects and Estimation of Post Harvest Losses in Some Horticulture Crops

In Egypt, improvements in handling and marketing commodities have had a lower priority than have endeavors to increase agricultural production, with the result that postharvest losses are severe. In any country, modifications in the handling-marketing system must be appropriate to the stage of development of that country, and, for example, not be in a capital-intensive direction if a labor-intensive system would be better suited to the employment situation. In Egypt, investments in marketing facilities such as packing and storage are inadequate and financial capabilities for their improvement are limited, though the cooperative system may be a way to reduce losses.
