Distribution and Relative Abundance of Submersed Aquatic Macrophytes in the St. Clair-Detroit River Ecosystem

An extensive survey was conducted in fall 1978 at 595 stations throughout the St. Clair-Detroit River Ecosystem (SCDRE) to determine the distribution and relative abundance of submersed aquatic macrophytes. Macrophytes were widely distributed in the SCDRE, being found at 68% of all stations. In the St. Clair and Detroit River, macrophyte beds adjacent to river channels used by commercial vessels passing between Lakes Huron and Erie (shipping channels) were generally less dense than those adjacent to river channels not used by commercial vessels.
