A review was undertaken of chemicals which melt in the temperature range 315 degrees K to 365 degrees K and which are suitable for the storage of thermal energy as a combination of sensible heat and latent heat of fusion. Problems of transition temperature, temperature of fusion, congruency of melting, supercooling, thermal conductivity, chemical stability and corrosion were considered. Of the chemicals studied, salt hydrates were found to be the most suitable, particularly potassium aluminium sulphate dodecahydrate. The report includes 86 citations.
