摘要

This study provides a basis for understanding the growth of water development institutions since 1847; it also divides the literature available into manageable proportions, and identifies the major historic themes. The study creates an awareness in the minds of those doing cultural resource management work of the kinds of physical remnants likely to be encountered and provides methods for assessing the significance of irrigation-related cultural resources.
