System for Measuring Public Use of Ross Barnett Reservoir District

The objective of this study was to develop a system for measuring (estimating) public use of Ross Barnett Reservoir District which is located near Jackson, Mississippi. Surveillance of visitation and usage during the recreation seasons comprising the summers of 1980 and 1981 enabled the identification of all significant points of access to the reservoir. An integrated estimation system, employing the use of traffic counters, camper registrations, infrared counting devices, and activity time-logs, has been designed and recommended for use by the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District. Supplemental data, procedural guidelines and a computer program have been developed for operationalizing the system.
