The elastodynamic field generated by a harmonically vibrating rigid rectangular base-plate on the traction-free surface of a semi-infinite homogeneous isotropic solid, is investigated. We assume a uniform particle displacement underneath the base plate. Hence, the fundamental unknown quantity is the normal component of the traction. The horizontal component of the traction is assumed to be zero, i.e. the contact between the base plate and the surface of the solid, is assumed to be frictionless. The vertical component of the traction follows by solving the integral equation for the latter quantity. In this integral equation, the half space Green's function occurs as kernel function. Special attention is given to the integral representation of the latter function.
