Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States: Mathematical and Physical Sciences

This volume presents results for 596 programs in six mathematical and physical science disciplines: chemistry, computer sciences, geosciences, mathematics, physics, and statistics/biostatistics. The assessment focuses on programs awarding research doctorates and their effectiveness in preparing students for careers in research. Sixteen separate measures related to program size, characteristics of recent graduates, reputational survey results, university library size, research support, and publication records were compiled in the evaluation of every program. Although earlier studies have relied almost exclusively on reputational surveys, the report emphasizes the importance of viewing program quality from the perspective of multiple indices and dimensions. No single, composite ranking of doctoral programs is provided.
