Clinical Comparison of the Effect of Daily Mouthrinsing with Stannous Fluoride and Sodium Floride upon Dental Caries, Dental Plaque, Gingivitis and Tooth Staining

Two groups of children, age 12-15, rinsed daily for 28 months with aqueous fluoride solutions, one group using 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) and the other group using 0.1% stannous fluoride (SnF2). The SnF2 group developed extrinsic stains of 3-4 times the severity of the NaF group, although the stains in the SnF2 group were quite mild and not explicitly distinguishable, even to the trained examiner. The SnF2 group demonstrated less plaque accumulation after 4 months, but the difference was not apparent at 16 and 28 months. Gingivitis was less severe in the SnF2 group at 4 months and 16 months, but not at 28 months. The increment of occlusal and bucco-lingual caries was less in the SnF2 group and the increment of proximal caries was less in the NaF group, measured over 28 months. There was no difference in total DMFS between the two groups.
