Current Status of Fluidization Engineering and Areas for Future Research Needs

The state-of-the-art of fluidization, particularly for design and scale-up of bed reactors, is reviewed. Particulate, bubbling, slugging, turbulent, and circulating fluidization are described and research needs in fluidization flow regimes are identified. Fluidized bed reactor models are examined and research needs are noted. Models are proposed for the heat transfer coefficients in fluidized beds and gas convective heat transfer, particle convective heat transfer, and radiative heat transfer are discussed. Also analyzed are three-phase fluidization and the phenomena and parameters important in the design of three-phase fluidized bed reactors including: bubble behavior, phase holds-ups, pressure drop, phase mixing, gas-liquid mass transfer, solid entrainment, and a flow regime map. The development of better instrumentation for studying conceptual and mechanistic pictures within fluidized beds is recommended.
