Steel: Supply and Demand in the 1980's

The central purpose of this study is to review projected trends in steel consumption in the United States in the 1980's and to determine the probability of steel shortages during that period. The first requirement is to assess historical domestic steel consumption and its relationship to economic growth. Future development of domestic steel capacity and probable availability of steel from foreign sources are additional factors in an assessment of the likelihood of supply stringency. For domestic shortages, a summary review of world steel supply/demand prospects is required. The cyclic pattern of past steel shortages also is reviewed and the prospects for their future replication examined.
