Escalator Design Features Evaluation

This study provides an evaluation of the effectiveness of several special design features associated with escalators in rail transit systems. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of three escalator design features: (1) mat operation in a single direction and reversible operation; (2) two-speed option (90 or 120 or both); and (3) the use of extended flat steps. The study evaluated these design features based on the impact of each on capital and operating costs, traffic flow, and safety.
