Simulated Hearth Experiments: An Archaeomagnetic Approach

Archaeomagnetism, as an absolute dating method, is a relatively recent introduction and, as such, some problems exist in its application and technique. Two of these issues are addressed--understanding the acquisition of remanent magnetism in small, burned features with respect to firing temperature, soil composition, and firing duration; and, refinement of collection procedures, i.e. comparison of results of cube orientation measurement according to the Brunton compass and the sun compass.
