Utilization and Processing of Forest Energy. Part 3. Equipment Techniques of Biomass Pelletization

Drying and densification of biomass to homogeneous pellets or briquettes improves its calorific value and reduces storage and handling costs. Techniques used for pelletizing wood and peat are largely based on that of fodder pelletization. There is industrial experience from the pelletization of waste wood and bark primarily in the USA and Canada. Experience from briquetting wood and peat has also been attained in Finland. This literature study surveys experiences and research results concerning densification techniques. In addition to ram presses and screw extruders, roll presses are also used for briquetting. In these the raw material is compressed to briquettes between two patterned rotating roll rings. The capacity of the biggest roll presses is as high as 50 t/h for briquetting brown coal. As far as is known there is no experience from wood briquetting.
