Leeches (Annelida: Hirudinea) of North America

Leeches are represented in North America by four orders, five families, 23 genera, and 63 species. The primitive family Acanthobdellidae is represented by one genus and species. The families Glossiphoniidae are represented by 10 genera and 29 species, the Piscicolidae by four genera and 10 species, the Hirudinidae by three genera and 13 species, and the Erpobdellidae by four genera, nine species and two subspecies. Taxonomic problems are discussed in the report.
