Cetyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, (CDBAC), has shown potential as a disinfectant in water and wastewater treatment. Since only a small amount of CDBAC is consumed during the disinfection process, the recovery and possible reuse of CDBAC after disinfection is a practical research objective. Aqueous CDBAC concentrations of 4 and 8 mg/l are effective for the disinfection of water considered to be a poor source, (i.e. coliform count greater than 5,000/100 mg). Since efficient CDBAC removals were achieved at influent-feed CDBAC concentrations of 4 and 8 mg/l, the combined process of disinfection of water with CDBAC and subsequent removal of CDBAC by an ion-exchange resin shows encouraging potential as a full-scale water purification process or as a purification process for a portable water treatment unit.
