Lake Wallenpaupack Water Quality Management Study. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) Phase 1 Diagnostic-Feasibility Study. Volume 1 and Volume 2

Over the past years, the water quality of Lake Wallenpaupack has deteriorated. In addition to the algal blooms, evidence of the oncoming eutrophic condition of the lake was found in reduced water clarity, increased nutrient concentrations, the appearance of excessive rooted plants around the lake, and the outbreak of water-borne infections. The primary objectives of the Diagnostic-Feasibility Study were: to evaluate the trophic conditions in the lake and determine their relative impacts on recreational uses of the lake and its watershed; to determine the location and magnitude of point and nonpoint sources of pollution to the lake and develop a nutrient budget; to develop a feasible watershed management plan to abate both point and nonpoint sources of pollutants and thereby allow for the natural rehabilitation of the lake; and to collect the appropriate information to be used for the implementation of specific watershed management practices.
