Punch Seeder for Arid and Semiarid Rangelands: A Prospectus

Establishment of improved grasses, legumes, and other forage plants on arid and semiarid rangelands is costly and ofttimes disappointing. Successful aerial and to a lesser extent, drill seeding is dependent upon the amount of surface soil moisture available during the germination stage and plant establishment. One possible solution for arid and semiarid rangeland seeding is punch seeding. Punch seeding is accomplished by making holes in the soil to levels where the moist microclimate is more favorable for plant germination and emergence over a much longer time than at conventional planting depths.
