Social Change and Ethnic Inequality in Malaysia

The dynamics of ethnic stratification in Malaysia in various socioeconomic areas and the community characteristics on patterns of ethnic inequality were studied. Results show that ethnic inequality varies widely in different socioeconomic realms and social change was slow and selective. Government expansion of educational opportunities may ease inequality in schooling, but have only minimal effects in private sector employment which is organized along kinship lines. The preliminary results from the community effects analysis suggest similar conclusions.
