The feasibility of using fluidized bed technology for glass batch preheating has been shown through Laboratory Testing. This technology provides over a 20-percent energy reduction, a reduction in air pollution emissions, a reduction in furnace operating temperature (and consequently increased furnace life), as well as less than a 2-year payback period. To investigate the compatibility of the fluidization process with the glass manufacturing process, a laboratory scale heat exchanger has been built and tested. Testing has focused on the basic feasibility questions concerning the concept. Tests performed have verified: the heat transfer performance; the fluidization characteristics of glass batch; the solids mixing and subsequent reduction of batch segregation; the elutriation characteristics (loss of fine particles); and that no deleterious effects, as indicated by laboratory crucible melts, are introduced by the fluidized bed.
