Environmental Factors Influencing the Use of Coal as a Marine Boiler Fuel

The environmental effects that may occur under a specified coal-fired ship scenario were estimated. Both air emissions and water emissions were included. The ship scenario was broken down by port, region, ship size, and trade. Six coals were chosen for the analysis. Marine boiler characteristics were investigated and used to aid in determining emission rates. Air and water quality modeling was performed to estimate impacts. Based on the scenario set forth at the beginning of the project, potential may exist for adversely impacting both air and water quality in the port area.
