Twenty-Year Growth of Ponderosa Pine Saplings Thinned to Five Spacings in Central Oregon

Diameter, height, and volume growth and yield are given for plots thinned to 1000, 500, 250, and 62 trees per acre in a 40- to 70-year-old-stand of suppressed ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex laws.) saplings in central Oregon. Trees averaged about 1-inch in diameter and eight feet in height at the time of thinning. Considerations for choosing tree spacing for precommercial thinning in this type of standard discussed.
