Gated Outlet Appurtenances: Earth Dams

The objective of this technical release (TR) is to assist the engineer in the development of plans for gated outlet appurtenances associated with small earth dams used for storage of water for irrigation. The basic design philosophy, criteria, procedures, design aids, standard details, and drawings are presented which are useful in developing construction drawings. The components of the outlet which are discussed are the conduit, inlet with associated trash rack, inlet vent pipe, gate control and outlet structure. The design considerations and various alternatives are presented for each component of the outlet.
