Results are presented of research on the Thermastress process to: (1) determine the relevant time-temperature-deformation structure interrelationships in low carbon steel in the 1000 to 2000F range; (2) determine the structure-mechanical property relations; (3) optimize the low speed processing in light of process efficiency and desired product properties. It is concluded that the Thermastress process is capable of reproducibly generating low carbon steel rod of unusual strength, over a wide range of single pass reductions. The microstructure, strength, and hardness of the as-processed rod are relatable to processing parameters and consistent with behavior outlined in fundamental mechanical tests. The strength of the rod is derived from the plastic working on the austenite prior to transformation and from the formation of bainite and martensite as transformation products.
