摘要

The research explored work experiences and outlook among nurses employed in mid-level management positions in nine randomly selected Georgia hospitals. The study found that work motivation and need fulfillment were most influenced by two factors: (1) the size of hospital - medium sized hospitals with 300 to 499 beds where more authority was delegated to unit management positions provided higher levels of need fulfillment to mid-level nurse managers than smaller (fewer than 300 beds) or larger (more than 500 beds) hospitals, and (2) role dissonance resulting from a disparity between the professional role expectation gained in formal training and the job as experienced.
