Indo-US Workshop on Mineral Processing and Chemical Metallurgy Held at Udaipur, India on 14-18 December 1981

Presentations made at a workshop held to promote cooperation between the United States and India in mineral processing and chemical metallurgy are provided. The status of research in mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy is reviewed and common research needs are identified. It is recommended that principles of sedimentation, including the role of reagents, floc growth mechanisms, and rheology, be investigated and that simple control systems be developed to minimize the need for instrumentation. Additional research on hydrometallurgy is recommended in four areas: (1) metal extraction from primary and secondary sources; (2) solution chemistry of separation and purification processing; (3) metal reduction from solution; and (4) process engineering and design. Deficiencies in existing copper smelting technologies are reviewed and the need for further research is identified. It is noted that basic studies are also needed for recovering the different metal values from the various process streams and for improving the process economy and product purities. Preworkshop tours are summarized and workshop participants are listed.
