Economic Impact of the State of Kentucky's Generic Drug Substitution Legislation: Addendum

This report presents findings concerning the effects of Kentucky's generic drug substitution legislation. A stratified random sample was selected of nearly 17,000 new prescriptions filled in community pharmacies during the time period July 1, 1980 - June 30, 1981. There is a large potential for the substitution of less costly generically equivalent products as well as an additional significant potential for savings by dispensing relatively low cost products when prescription orders are written generically. The latter was not addressed by the Kentucky law. The study additionally examined the impact of Maximum Allowable Cost-Estimated Acquisition Cost (MAC-EAC) methodology of Kentucky's Medicaid program.
