This appendix to the report lists the distribution of references contained in patents to various sources. Patent reference counts are presented by the year the patent was filed for chemical patents(analytical processes), electrical patents (light responsive semiconductors), mechanical patents (semiconductor manufacturing and medicinal applicators), and by the year and sector for electrical patents field effect devices). The subject and research level distribution of references and the age distribution of examiner and applicant references are noted. The distribution of second generation research papers by field, research level, sector, and support source is outlined. A sector cross-citing from U.S. and foreign owned patents to U.S. and foreign owned papers is included. A paper assessing the linkage between patents and fundamental research is presented.
