Mechanisms of Forgetting in Aged Animals

Memory processes in the Fischer 344 rat were studied to determine if memory deficits were the result of a failure to encode information or a failure to retrieve already encoded information, and if qualitative differences existed in the encoding characteristics of younger and older animals. In general, the data suggest that there are no qualitative differences in the discriminative cues used by these animals across the life span.
