Two Standard Precipitation Gages and the Gamma Transmission Snow Gage: A Statistical Comparison

Data from two types of recording precipitation gages and a gamma transmission profiling snow gage installed near Soda Springs, in the Sierra Nevada of California, were statistically compared. Precipitation catches by a weighing bucket and a tipping bucket gage were closely correlated (r=0.9832), but weighing bucket gage catch and snow gage measurement were less closely correlated (r=0.9246). Equations have been developed for predicting weighing bucket gage catch from tipping bucket catch. Also presented are equations for predicting weighing bucket catch from changes in snowpack water equivalent that have occurred from one snow gage measurement to the next.
