The Howes Leather Co., Inc. is located in Curwensville, PA. The facility began production in 1892 as the American Leather Co., manufacturing upper leather for shoes. The plant processes a total of 1220 cattle hides per day. The existing building, completed in the 1890s was designed to accommodate the vegetable tanning process. A scrubhouse was added in the 1940s and a very sophisticated effluent treatment facility was added in 1979. The area of concern at the Howes Leather Co. is the beam house. The only compound of significance identified as a potential health risk was ammonia.
