Recent theoretical work attempting to model the stress and strain paths imposed on clay soils during installation and loading of displacement piles was reviewed. Soil movements at pile installation were described by idealizing the installation as the expansion of a cylindrical cavity under planar strain. In pile loading, the load is transferred to the soil by shear stresses at the pile shaft. These effects were examined for the two extremes of a normally consolidated clay and a heavily overconsolidated clay. Tentative design parameters for unit skin friction values were developed.
