摘要

Chatham, built circa 1768 to 1771, is a classic example of a brick Georgian-style mansion. The manor's association with prominent individuals such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Clara Barton and its use during the Civil War are part of its history covered in this preliminary historic resource study. The study traces the history of Chatham from its construction to its transfer to the National Park Service in 1976. In conjunction with this topic, the families associated with Chatham are discussed beginning with William Fitzhugh who came to Virginia from England in 1670 to John L. Pratt, the last private owner. The report contains a chain of title for Chatham as well as maps and photographs.
