In this investigation, 48 pharmacies were selected randomly from within six geographic areas (inpatient-hospital pharmacies and institutional pharmacies were excluded); all physicians identified as prescribing anticonvulsant medication were eligible; patients selected from among those treated by sample physicians were interviewed briefly by telephone, provided that they were diagnosed as chronic epileptics and contact was permitted by the prescribing physician. This report includes a recommended design for a national survey. Also, it includes a rationale for selecting this design over various alternatives.
