Choroidal Melanoma in Chemical Workers: Increased Incidence of Choroidal Malignant Melanoma Occurring in a Single Population of Chemical Workers

A cluster of eye cancers occurring among employees of the DuPont Belle, West Virginia plant in the Kanawha River valley was brought to public attention by a laboratory worker at that plant who suspected that the overall occurrence of cancer among his fellow employees, in particular eye cancer, was excessively high. A report by company epidemiologists on cancer occurrence at that plant reported as well that a statistically significant excess number of cases of eye cancer (all histological types combined) and of kidney cancers had occurred among plant employees.
