The Committee reviews technological and toxicological data in six dated reports for: acrylonitrile monomer, vinylidene chloride monomer, styrene monomer, hydrolysed lecithin, modified starches, and flavorings. The first three compounds may be present as residues in certain plastics and articles made from them and are likely to migrate into foodstuffs. The Committee is agreed that residues of these compounds should be reduced as far as possible, especially as regards acrylonitrile which animal tests have shown to be a carcinogen. The last three substances are food additives. Hydrolysed lecithin may be regarded as an alternative to lecithin. Recent studies on pelvic nephrocalcinosis show modified starches in Group B to be acceptable. However, starches modified with epichlorhydrin are carcinogenic and limits are set for those modified with propylene oxide. It is recommended that a list of acceptable nature-identical substances and source materials for natural flavoring preparations should be established.
