摘要

Research was undertaken to determine the rate of adsorption of surfactant at oil-water interfaces by measuring interfacial tension as a function of time. It was found that the popular spinning drop interfacial tensiometer cannot be trusted to measure equilibrium interfacial tensions in the presence of surfactants. A broad class of techniques for measuring the interfacial tension in which the configuration of axisymmetric interfaces is observed cannot be used to follow interfacial tension as a function of time with sufficient accuracy to allow inference of the adsorption rate coefficient. The Wilhelmy Plate with continuous force measurement can be used to study the rate of adsorption of surfactant at liquid-gas interfaces, but not at liquid-liquid interfaces. Capillary waves created by forced oscillations also can be used to study the rate of adsorption of surfactant at liquid-gas interfaces and to measure interfacial dilatational viscosity.
