Assessing Mineral and Energy Resource Potential: A Report on a Workshop on Data Requirements, Data Sources, and Assessment Methodologies for Evaluating Undiscovered Resources

Chapter 1, the Summary, contains the overall committee findings and recommendations. Chapter 2, the Introduction, gives background information on BLM management responsibilities, the purposes and objectives of COMRE, and the scope of this project. Chapter 3 evaluates the workshop presentations on various resources, describes data requirements for assessing the resource potential of each, and suggests appropriate data sources and assessment methodologies and techniques. The report emphasizes assessment data requirements and sources because these topics seem to be of most direct relevance to BLM. Assessment techniques are also discussed because they were an integral part of the workshop, but extensive technical discussions on the variety of assessment techniques were not anticipated for this project. Chapter 4 discusses how federal and state agencies can assist BLM in its mission. Chapter 5 discusses the evaluation of geologic hazard potential in relation to resource potential assessments, another area of concern and activity for BLM. The relationship between mineral development and the geologic hazard potential of the development is also discussed.
