Slurry and Suspension Transport: An Assessment of Current Research and Long-Term Interdisciplinary Needs

Research in slurry and suspension transport is reviewed as is research in the support areas of particle size characteristics and fundamental fluid-particle phenomena. Settling in single and multi-particle systems is considered and results of investigations into these topics are provided. Fine particle suspension rheology and flow behavior and the flow of coarse settling suspensions are addressed. Research needs in slurry and suspension transport are identified, including: (1) research to define and measure particle bulk and surface properties relevant to suspension behavior; (2) studies aimed at developing an understanding of the role of fines in slurry transport; and (3) investigations to develop correlations relating heat and mass transfer coefficients to suspension microstructure.
