Improved Atomization of Residual Fuels for Marine Boilers. Volume IV: Combustion Tests

This investigation was comprised of five major subtasks. This report documents work conducted during the combustion testing phase of the investigation, however, a review of work conducted during the previous subtasks is included. Full scale combustion tests were performed with a marine burner under conditions which simulated that of a typical marine boiler. Two different atomizer designs were utilized during these combustion tests, the baseline X jet atomizer and the improved X jet atomizer developed under Task 3 of this investigation. The baseline atomizer was used for all base Bunker C oil and Bunker C oil/water emulsion tests. The improved X jet atomizer combustion tests were performed on straight Bunker C oil to compare its performance with the baseline atomizer.
