The Undrained Behaviour of the Rio de Janeiro Clay in the Light of Critical State Theories

The undrained behavior of the Rio de Janeiro clay is analysed in this paper using critical state theories. Critical state parameters have been obtained from previously conducted oedometer and triaxial tests. The parameters are shown to be dependent on the stress level. Most data available on triaxial tests made use of the SHANSEP method and it is suggested that further tests at lower stress levels closer to those existing in situ should be conducted.
